Before I came to college I wish that I known that you really don't need a book for all the classes your in. At orientation I signed up for the pre-packaged books, which was handy but a mistake all in all. I think that if I had came to school and went to classes for a week or two, I could have found out which class actually requires a book, and saved myself a couple hundred dollars.
Just today in my economics class the teacher, who said the book was great and manditory in the first week of class, has waited until past the return date to display his deep hatred for the book, writers, and anything to do with either. Fantastic.

I feel the same way and I hate the bookstore. Im never buying anything from there again nor am I ever getting pre-packaged books.
ReplyDeleteI also would have liked to know that. I made the mistake of pre-packaging my books. I would have rather waited to see which books I actually needed.

ReplyDeleteI hate how much books cost! I spent over 800 dollars on my books this semester! I about died when they told me how much they cost!
ReplyDeleteI did the same thing when I was a freshman. I think my total bill was pushing 1000 the first time I bought books when I would of done just fine without a few of them. Good blog but next time try to make it a little bit longer, around five paragraphs.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you. I ended up returning all my books except one. And my roommate and I split the cost of our bio book, so we share that and it works perfectly.
ReplyDeleteThat definitely is a common problem for incoming freshman. The bookstore advertises getting books early everywhere and it's usually the only place most freshman know about, at least for me that's how it was. What they don't share is that they jack up the prices... and that you may not need the book for class. Also, good idea on sharing a text book with a friend, Ashley!
ReplyDeleteIf any of you need a physics 221/222 text book for next spring, I have one that I'm willing to sell at a competitive price... if they are still using the same edition.
I know exactly how you feel! That same thing happened to me. I have 2 books that I really don't need and spent how much money on it...
ReplyDeleteI definately know where your comin from. As freshmen it was really conveinient to just preorder them but that has been a bust in some instances and now I'm definately just getting them myself next semester and after a few days of class.
ReplyDeleteA lot of times professors assign a textbook because they are required to by the department.
ReplyDeleteIt is always a good idea to get a feel for the course before purchasing a book, but also be aware of the courses that expect you to have a chapter or two under your belt within the first week (you may want to buy that book earlier).
